MERMEC Inc. has released its second-generation wheel profile measurement system WheelSpecII®. The new design reduces the installation time and the disruption to traffic while improving reliability and enhancing the performance, the company says. WheelSpecII still automatically measures wheel profiles in real time, using laser-powered non-contact measurement techniques at speeds up to 60 mph. A new higher-speed version is also being developed. Coupled with the automatic reading of car identification, a complete database of the wheel population condition can be provided for rolling stock maintenance planning. Real-time safety alarms can flag out-of-specification wheels. Measurements include: flange height, flange thickness, flange gradient, flange angle, rim thickness, tread taper, tread hollow, grooved tread, built-up tread, back to back wheel gauge, angle of attack, wheel diameter and axle number.
