Sunday marked the first anniversary of the tragic Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway derailment in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, which was the most devastating train accident in Canadian history, Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) officials said in a press release. The board considers its ongoing investigation into the July 6, 2013, accident — which caused 47 fatalities and destroyed more than 30 buildings in Lac-Mégantic's downtown area — a top priority. Throughout the investigation, the board has issued three recommendations and four safety advisories pertaining to crude by rail, TSB officials said."Investigations are complex, and we take the time to conduct a thorough, science-based examination to find out what happened and why," said TSB Chair Wendy Tadros. "We have a team of highly skilled experts dedicated to this investigation, and we expect to release the TSB's report in the next few months."The rail industry is committed to learning everything it can from the accident to ensure such a tragedy never happens again, said Railway Association of Canada (RAC) officials in a statement."This tragedy deeply affected every railway and every rail employee in Canada," said RAC President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Bourque. "The community of Lac-Mégantic continues to be in the hearts and minds of the Canadian rail industry."
