Washington state panel solicits rail-safety grant applications

The Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission is accepting applications for grants to fund safety improvements at railroad crossings or along tracks.

Provided through the state Grade Crossing Protective Fund, the awards are limited to $20,000 for each project. Applications will be accepted through Jan. 1, 2017, commission officials said in a press release.

Projects to be considered for grants include installation of lights, gates and energy-efficient LED flashing lights at crossings. Past projects have included replacing old signage at crossings, upgrading train-warning devices and erecting fences to prevent trespassing on tracks.

The commission will consider the cost, severity of the hazard and safety benefits of completed projects when making its grant award decisions.
