North Carolina DOT finishes improvement project at NS crossing

The North Carolina Department of Transportation's (NCDOT) Rail Division recently completed safety improvements at a Norfolk Southern Railway crossing in High Point, N.C.

The department installed crossing signals, gates and cantilevers at the intersection of Pendleton Street and NS tracks, NCDOT officials said in a press release.

Funded by the Federal Highway Administration and the state, this project cost $428,205 to complete. Maintenance funding for the projects will be divided equally between the municipality and NS.

Each day, 26 freight and passenger trains travel through the crossing at a maximum speed of 65 mph.

This project is part of a comprehensive NCDOT program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public grade crossings. Automatic warning devices are now in place at more than 2,600 of the 3,800 public crossings throughout the state, NCDOT officials said.
