Transport Canada this week announced CA$20 million in federal dollars will go toward 105 rail safety projects.

Nearly all the projects focus on infrastructure, technology and research, including safety improvements on rail properties and grade crossing closures.

Two projects involve education and awareness initiatives focused on reducing injuries and fatalities in Canadian cities, Transport Canada officials said in a press release.

The funds are being distributed under the Canadian government's Rail Safety Improvement Program, which builds on three previous rail safety programs. The latest iteration of the program includes an expanded list of eligible recipients.

"We are working closely with railway companies and road authorities to identify grade crossings that require safety improvements," said Minister of Transport Marc Garneau.
