Transport Canada this week issued a call for proposals for 2021-2022 for a new rail safety component under the government's Community Participation Funding Program (CPFP), with funding up to CA$300,000 available.

The new component will focus on local and Indigenous community-based rail safety engagement by supporting collaboration with those communities and increasing awareness and information-sharing to mitigate railway incidents, Transport Canada officials said in a press release.

CPFP will provide short-term grants to eligible communities and organizations to develop and improve Canada’s existing rail safety transportation system. The agency is encouraging grant recipients to share their knowledge and expertise to help inform future programming.

"The new rail safety component of the Community Participation Funding Program is another step towards meaningful engagement with local and Indigenous communities as we work together to ensure our rail system operates as safely and securely as possible across Canada," said Transport Minister Omar Alghabra.

The CPFP was launched in 2017. Transport Canada announced in August the commitment of over CA$100 million over five years for activities modernizing rail safety and security.
