The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has approved a stipulated agreement to improve a grade crossing in Ogle County owned by BNSF Railway Co.

BNSF will install new automatic flashing light signals, gates with bells, warning time circuitry and an event recorder and remote monitoring system at the North Union Road crossing in Polo, Illinois. The cost estimate is $223,364, but the ICC has recommended that the state’s Grade Crossing Protection Fund be used to cover 95% of project costs. The work is expected to be completed within 12 months.

"These upgrades are needed and will greatly improve safety at this location," said ICC Commissioner Michael Carrigan in a press release.
