Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) this week unveiled its 2022 Annual Report, detailing the organization’s accomplishments in its 50th anniversary year.
The report highlights OLI's 2022 events, training classes, public outreach and Rail Safety Week activities. The report also provides a summary of grant projects, a financial overview and a list of the organization's partnerships.
In 2022, OLI was recognized by Amtrak with a commemorative OL 50th Anniversary locomotive; spurred engagement on its website and via social media; created and shared rail safety measures for adults and children; and developed and released more than 180 new tools and resources to promote rail safety messages.
"We also created a website landing page with videos from federal safety partners, an interactive timeline, a feature spotlighting 50 Operation Lifesaver Authorized Volunteers (OLAVs) and 12 Train Track Trivia online games," said OLI Executive Director Rachel Maleh in a press release.
Since OLI's launch in 1972, collisions at railroad crossings across the United States have dropped by 82% through education, engineering and enforcement efforts.
"While great strides have been made over the past 50 years, there is more work to do," said Maleh in the report, which notes that every three hours in the United States, a person or vehicle is hit by a train.
