The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) yesterday unveiled the winners of its 2023 Safety and Environment Awards, which recognize excellence and innovation.

This year's recipients in the safety category are:
CN for its Enablon Go system, which provides real-time data on near-misses and hazards, ensuring swift action to prevent incidents;
Cando Rail & Terminals for its Good Catch Campaign, which shares positive employee involvement and enhances hazard identification;
Rocky Mountaineer, for its nonpunitive incident-reporting system that fosters a culture of open communication and continuous improvement in safety;
Toronto Terminals Railway Co. for empowering employees with its Front-Line Safety Program, which integrates ownership into common functions and promotes a culture of contribution; and
Metrolinx, for its Text-for-Help initiative, which provides transit riders a discreet communication method for incident reporting.

This year’s recipients in the environment category are:
• CN for its Lac Huit Mille Fish Pass Initiative, which showcased commitment to community and environmental stewardship through bank stabilization work along the Matapedia River; and
Exo for its Sound Energy Management Program, which achieved a 7.3% reduction in annual diesel consumption and prevented 2,900 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in 2022.

"Safety is job one for all railroaders and it's a key component of sustainability," said RAC President and CEO Marc Brazeau in a press release. "This year’s award recipients are living proof of an industry-wide commitment to continuously investing, innovating and improving as they pull for Canada."
