The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) last week greenlit the installation of new automatic warning gates at six grade crossings located along Chicago, Central and Pacific Railroad tracks in Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties.
The total estimated cost of the signal designs and construction is $3.3 million. ICC staff recommended the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) be used to cover 95% of the costs, not to exceed just over $3.1 million.
The railroad will be responsible for paying for the remaining 5% of the design and installation, as well as future maintenance costs. All work must be completed within 18 months from the order date, ICC officials said in a press release.
The ICC also approved new safety measures at three crossings along Illinois Central Railroad/CN tracks near New Athens and Lenzburg in St. Clair County.
The total estimated cost of the signal design and construction is $1.6 million, of which the GCPF is recommended to be used to cover 95% of costs, not to exceed $1.5 million. Illinois Central Railroad/CN will be responsible for the remaining 5% and future costs.
Existing highway approaches at the crossings will need to be rehabilitated at a cost of $525,156, with the GCPF covering 100% of those costs. All work must be completed within 18 months, ICC officials said in a press release.
