Transport Canada recently announced the award of C$45 million in federal funding to help pay for railway safety improvement projects.

Under the Canadian Rail Safety Improvement Program, over C$44 million will go toward 231 infrastructure improvements at grade crossings and rail safety programs across Canada. This includes five research and education projects, for C$2 million.

Operation Lifesaver received the largest federal contribution, C$1.2 million, to continue educating citizens about the dangers of trespassing on and crossing over tracks. A complete list of education and research projects receiving federal funding as part of the Rail Safety Improvement Project can be read here

Nearly C$1.2 million was awarded to the Program to Enhance Rail Safety Engagement, which supports Indigenous and local communities’ rail safety awareness campaigns and policy and practice updates in partnership with Transport Canada, the federal institution responsible for transportation policies and programs.
