KCS takes safety support to front-line level

In January, Kansas City Southern adopted a new safety approach under which front-line supervisors are encouraged to rely on the knowledge of their specific work area to ensure safe operations. Supervisors receive support from a safety steering committee, which oversees cross-functional groups that address issues on health, environment, equipment, tools, safety compliance and security.

Now, KCS is providing supervisors one-on-one support. The railroad recently expanded the duties of General Superintendent of Safety Rules and Operations Testing Dennis Marzec to include working directly with supervisors in the field to address safety concerns. He also will assist local committees with safety issues, coordinate recognition programs and direct KCS' safety plan.

"My new role is to work with the officers and employees of all departments to build upon and strengthen existing safety processes, as opposed to creating new safety programs," said Marzec in a prepared statement. "Employee empowerment and productive local safety committees will continue to be the foundation of our safety process."
