The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) yesterday announced the winners of the 2020 Bus and Rail Safety and Security Excellence Awards, which recognize “innovative and proactive” safety and security programs.

“These awards help to build the industry by benchmarking successful programs so other systems can implement and fine-tune their programs based on the findings of their peers,” APTA officials said in a press release.

Nominations are evaluated on four criteria: effectiveness, benefit level, innovation and transferability.

The top honor is the Gold Award, which is given to organizations with the best overall safety or security programs.

The Rail Safety Gold Award winners are MTA Long Island Rail Road in New York City in the commuter/intercity rail category, and the Niagara Frontier Transit Metro System Inc. in Buffalo, New York in the light rail/streetcar category.

The Rail Security Gold Award winners are Amtrak in the commuter/intercity rail category, and the Sacramento Regional Transit District in Sacramento in the light rail/streetcar category.

A certificate of merit award is also given to organizations in recognition of exceptional achievement in safety or security. To view the full list of those honorees, and program descriptions for all winners, click here
