Workers at CSX's intermodal terminal in Memphis, Tennessee, recently marked a safety milestone by going 14 years without a recordable injury under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
The milestone represents more than 122,640 hours working safely to deliver service to customers "in a reliable way," CSX officials said Jan. 9 in a press release.
Memphis is a "grounded facility," which means that when inbound intermodal trains arrive at the terminal, the crews move the containers off the trains and onto the ground, said Ahmed Shakarchi, Memphis terminal operations supervisor, in a video about the terminal. Trucks then pick up containers and move them for loading onto outbound trains.
"The safety at Memphis is second to none, and it starts with the guys who do the everyday work outside," Shakarchi said.
