Caltrain has announced a grade separated crossing at East 31st Avenue in San Mateo, California, will open tomorrow to all modes of traffic for the first time, providing a new east-west connection from El Camino Real to the Bay Meadows neighborhood.

The crossing is the final road component of the 25th Avenue Grade Separation Project.

The project involved separating the tracks and road at East 25th Avenue and creating new east-west connections at 28th and 31st Avenues. Earlier this year, a new East 28th Avenue and an improved East 25th Avenue opened between El Camino Real and South Delaware Street.

The improvements at East 25th Avenue eliminated the risk of pedestrians and vehicles accessing the tracks, Caltrain officials said in a news release. A new road between South Delaware Street and El Camino Real improves emergency vehicle access to surrounding neighborhoods, they said.

The project also included the construction of a new Hillsdale Station, which Caltrain opened in April. A ribbon-cutting event is planned for September.
