Caltrain, in cooperation with its city partners, will soon begin a project to improve five grade crossings in San Mateo and Menlo Park, California.

The improvements are designed to increase the safety for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, Caltrain officials said in a press release.

Improvements include more clearly marked pedestrian crossings with new paint striping, lettering and pavement markers.

The project also calls for the installation of a fixed concrete median with flexible bollards. The median is designed to prevent motorists from driving around lowered crossing gates.

The crossing improvement sites involve three locations along Railroad Avenue in San Mateo, at Glenwood Avenue and Garwood Way in Menlo Park, and at Oak Grove Avenue and Merrill Street in Menlo Park.

About $1.5 million in state funding has been provided for the projects.
