Canadian Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra last week announced a new rail safety program aimed at Indigenous and local communities.

The Program to Enhance Rail Safety Engagement will help encourage Indigenous and local communities participate in rail-safety initiatives, Transport Canada officials said in a press release.

The program builds on existing rail-safety funding established in 2021 in the Community Participation Funding Program. The Indigenous- and local-focused program will further expand opportunities for stakeholders to share their knowledge and expertise about local environments, officials said.

"The knowledge and expertise of Indigenous and local communities is vital in making sure rail safety initiatives and future programming continue to keep communities in Canada safe," Transport Canada officials said.

Alghabra also called for funding applications under the program, which offers up to CA$1.6 million in funding to Indigenous governments, communities, councils, associations, commissions, economic institutions and nonprofit organizations. Those proposals are due Feb. 16, 2023. An application guide can be found here.
