Canada's government yesterday announced plans to provide more than CA$13.5 million to support 112 projects in the greater Toronto area and other parts of Ontario through the Rail Safety Improvement Program.
The program provides funding for projects designed to improve safety at grade crossings and along rail lines. In addition, the program funds rail infrastructure, helps address climate change resiliency, supports research studies and new technology pilot projects, and helps educate Canadians about railway safety, Canadian government officials said in a news release.
As part of the newest investments, the government will award about CA$280,000 for a crossing improvement project in Markham — one of a dozen projects in the city that have been approved for the program's current round of funding. Pedestrian gates, fencing and other protective measures have been added at the GO Transit crossing on Main Street.
"We're investing to improve the safety of Canadians, especially those who work and live along our railway lines," said Canadian Minister of Transport Pablo Rodriguez.
Since the program was launched in 2016, the government has provided more than CA$230 million to help fund over 1,000 projects.
