In 2019, 1,246 rail accidents were reported to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), up from 2018's total of 1,169 and a 17 percent increase from the previous 10-year average of 1,064, the agency reported yesterday.

The main-track accident rate last year was 3.3 accidents per million main-track train miles, up from 2.6 percent in 2018 and 42 percent above the 10-year average of 2.3, TSB officials said in a press release.

Rail fatalities rose to 72 last year from 57 reported in 2018, a figure about the same as the 10-year average of 73. Crossing accident-related fatalities rose to 28 last year from 19 the previous year, while trespasser fatalities rose to 38 from 34.

Five rail employees were fatally injured, which is higher than the 10-year average of two.
