Canadian government to provide additional funds for grade crossing improvements
advertisement
Yesterday, the Government of Canada announced it will provide nearly $14 million in new funding for the federal Grade Crossing Improvement Program (GCIP) this year.
The additional funds will help pay for improvements at 810 crossings throughout the country.
Through the GCIP, eligible grade crossings are upgraded, relocated or closed based on traffic volume, accident history and other factors. Improvements include installing flashing lights and gates, linking crossing signals to nearby traffic lights, or adding new circuits or timing devices.
Transport Canada finances up to 80 percent of the total cost of the grade crossing improvements, with the balance provided by the railways and road authorities.
