The University of Louisville Center for Hazards Research and Policy Development and Citizens for Rail Safety are ready to unveil five Web-based interactive maps designed to monitor and rank the nation’s grade crossings by the number of incidents and fatalities.
At today’s National Conference of State Legislators in Boston, the parties will introduce the maps, which also show locations of major accidents involving hazardous materials.
The university and Citizens for Rail Safety — a non-profit organization dedicated to improving U.S. rail safety — collected and assessed existing accident data, and incorporated Google mapping technology with Geographic Information Systems to develop the online maps.
