The Federal Transit Administration yesterday issued a safety advisory asking state safety oversight agencies (SSOA) to direct transit agencies in their jurisdictions to analyze the risk of on-street running rail vehicle collisions.
The safety advisory was issued in an attempt to reduce fatalities and injuries caused by such collisions, which occur more than 10 times as much as incidents at typical grade crossings, according to an FTA press release.
The SSOAs have until Dec. 26 to notify the transit agencies of the FTA's request. The SSOAs will then have until May 26, 2025, to submit information to the FTA.
On Dec. 12, the FTA will host a webinar on the advisory. Registration information is available here.
