San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG), local, state and federal officials gathered Aug. 2 to formally break ground on the Turnbull Canyon Road grade-separation project in Industry, California.

The project is the final grade separation in SGVCOG's comprehensive Alameda Corridor-East (ACE) program of 19 grade separations and 55 safety improvements at key railroad crossings in eastern Los Angeles County.

The $118 million project will include the construction of a two-lane roadway overpass on Turnbull Canyon Road between Salt Lake Avenue and Clark Avenue, allowing vehicles to pass over Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The crossing is currently blocked by 59 trains daily, a number that's expected to rise to 102 by 2042, SGVCOG officials said in a press release.

The project is designed to significantly reduce traffic delays, cutting motorists' wait times by 447 minutes each day. It will also address noise pollution from train horns and gate alarms, benefiting both residents and businesses, council officials said.

“This overpass will provide essential safety enhancements for commuters and streamline the flow of goods from our ports, benefiting the Southern California region and beyond,” said SGVCOG President Tim Hepburn.
