Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) recently offered hazmat safety training for emergency responders in Volusia and Palm Beach counties, Florida.

The railroad partnered with The Safety Train — an independent organization that operates a train equipped with onboard classrooms and tank cars — to assist experts from FEC, other railroads and environmental services companies in providing hands-on instruction regarding hazardous materials transportation equipment and liquified natural gas (LNG).

"The safety for our employees and communities is our primary mission as we strive to provide timely service to our customers," said Fran Chinnici, FEC's senior vice president and chief operating officer in a press release.

FEC "pioneered the use of LNG as a locomotive fuel," which helps the railroad reduce emissions, company officials said.

"As we continue to implement the latest equipment, processes and technology to improve our operations and overall sustainability, we simultaneously ensure the highest level of safety and reliability," said Chinnici.

FEC plans to conduct similar training with other counties on Florida's East Coast in the days ahead.
