The Riverside County Transportation Department in Jurupa Valley, California, has awarded a $64 million contract for the Jurupa Road grade-separation project to Granite Construction.
The scope of work includes separating Jurupa Road and Union Pacific Railroad track by constructing a grade separation and relocating existing rail spurs. Construction is expected to begin in August and be completed in August 2023.
As the daily vehicle traffic and train counts continue to grow at the crossing, the grade separation will improve safety by mitigating traffic congestion, decreasing emergency vehicle response time and reducing air pollution, Granite officials said in a press release.
"We are happy to continue our long-established relationships with both the Riverside County Transportation Department and the Union Pacific Railroad," said Granite Regional Vice President Brad Williams. "We look forward to enhancing safety and improving the roadway conditions for community members and the driving public."
Regional population growth and increasing freight-rail traffic from nearby ports has increased congestion and delays at the existing crossing, county transportation officials said on the project’s website.
