The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) and the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) both approved grade crossing safety upgrades in their respective states last week.

The ICC authorized the installation of new automatic flashing light signals and gates at two Union Pacific Railroad grade crossings in Franklin County near Zeigler, ICC officials said in a press release.

The estimated combined cost of the projects including design and construction is $728,688. ICC staff recommended that the state’s grade crossing protection fund be used to pay 95% of project costs, not to exceed $692,254. UP will pay the remaining 5% of the design and installation, as well as future maintenance costs. All work must be completed within 18 months from the order date, ICC officials said.

PUCO approved the installation of flashing lights and gates and a new surface at a crossing in Norwood, Hamilton County. The Indiana & Ohio Railway will install the safety features by Nov. 19. Federal funding approved by PUCO will pay $305,864 to complete the project, according to the commission's press release.

Local governments may seek additional funding from the PUCO for additional safety additions to crossings such as rumble strips, illumination or improved signage. PUCO funding for these additional projects can’t exceed $5,000 each, PUCO officials said.
