The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) last week approved two public safety rail improvement projects along Union Pacific Railroad track in Marion County.

Automatic flashing light signals with gates will be installed at two grade crossings: County Road 1900 North and County Road 1800 North.

The estimated cost of design and installation is $683,880. ICC staff recommended 95% of the cost be covered by the state's Grade Crossing Protection Fund. UP will be responsible for the remaining 5%.

At the County Road 1800 North crossing, the ICC also approved highway approach improvements. The estimated cost of that work — $492,000 — is to be completely paid by the GCPF. All work is to be completed within 18 months.
