Illinois panel OKs grade crossing upgrades over Union Pacific track

advertisement

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) last week approved the installation of new automatic warning gates and highway grade approach improvements at four grade crossings over Union Pacific Railroad in Franklin and Marion counties.

The estimated cost of the signal designs and installation is $2 million. ICC staff recommended that the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) be used to cover 95% of the costs. UP will be responsible for the remaining 5% of the cost to design and install the upgrades, as well as future maintenance, according to an ICC press release.

Total estimated cost of the approach curb design and construction is $130,000, which will be covered 100% by the GCPF. The village of Kinmundy and the Six Mile Township Road District will be responsible for future maintenance costs.

All work must be completed within 18 months.
