During the past few weeks, Kansas City Southern has conducted Grade Crossing Collision Investigation (GCCI) courses for 52 law enforcement officers in Gulfport, Miss., and Wylie, Texas.

The courses are designed to familiarize officers with crossing laws, investigative techniques and safety concerns to consider while investigating accidents.

"Law enforcement officers have an opportunity to refresh or enhance their knowledge of public safety surrounding railroads [and] the railroad has an opportunity to build relationships with local law enforcement in the communities we serve,” said KCS Director of Public Safety Allen Pepper in a prepared statement.

Each year, KCS conducts 20 GCCI courses in various communities throughout the railroad’s 10-state system. The courses are endorsed by Operation Lifesaver Inc., the International Association of Chiefs of Police and National Sheriff's Association.
