Rail News: Safety
Kansas City Southern recently formed a train accident prevention team to analyze accident data, identify root causes, develop and execute action plans, and measure results.
Earlier this week, the team held its first meeting in Shreveport, La. Team members include Senior Vice President of Operations Jerry Heavin, General Superintendent of Field Operations J.R. Thornell, General Superintendent of Transportation Mark Redd, Assistant Chief Mechanical Officer John Foster, Track Engineer Oliver Waltman and Signal Engineer Buck Jones. General Superintendent of Rules and Testing Dennis Marzec serves as team leader, and Manager of Reporting Systems Mike Nelson, facilitator.
"The structure that has already been provided to the data capture process is giving us a comprehensive look at the big picture pertaining to accidents," said Heavin in a prepared statement, referring to accident data reported to the critical incident desk at KCS' System Transportation Center.
One of five sub committees within KCS' safety steering committee, the train accident and prevention team plans to first begin an in-depth analysis of accidents at all major terminals.
