Kansas City Southern recently presented 67 chemical shippers with 2002 Hazardous Accidental Release Prevention (HARP) awards, which the Class I created last year to recognize shippers' hazardous-materials safety, environmental protection and regulatory compliance.

Fifty-six recipients received excellence awards; 11 earned improvement awards. The "excellence" category recognizes chemical customers that ship more than 5,000 loads, or between 100 and 4,999 loads without experiencing a non-accidental release. The "improvement" category recognizes shippers "significant safety process improvements" that prevent non-accidental releases, according to a prepared statement.

Last year, KCS moved more than 55,000 haz-mat carloads.
