MARTA to conduct system-wide safety review
advertisement
The Metropolitan Area Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is launching a system-wide review of the agency’s maintenance and safety programs after three escalators malfunctioned on New Year’s Eve, causing injuries.
MARTA also plans to form a board safety committee to oversee maintenance and safety programs.
Since the malfunctions, authority workers have been conducting safety inspections on all of the agency’s 149 escalators, and MARTA officials have been reviewing maintenance and inspection procedures. The authority also hired an independent industry expert to conduct a separate review of the escalator systems and expects to conduct a peer review of its escalator program.
Last year, MARTA launched a $113 million program that calls for rehabilitating all escalators during the next 10 years.
