Mass Coastal Railroad (MCRR) has released its second monthly railroad trespassing report, detailing recorded trespassing incidents in April and May.
The reports are part of an ongoing effort by MCRR to increase public awareness of the dangers of illegally trespassing on railroad property, according to Mass Coastal news release.
The incidents reported range from foreign objects being left on active tracks to dangerous ATV encounters and vandalism. In one instance, a train operator was forced to apply the train’s emergency brakes when a biker sped through an active railroad crossing, in front of the oncoming train.
"With the summer months approaching, we tend to experience a spike in railroad trespassing as more folks are visiting the Cape and spending more time outdoors," said said MCRR President and CEO Chris Podgurski. "Bikers, pedestrians, fishers and tourists must remain vigilant and aware of the dangers of railroad trespassing. Safety is our top priority at MCRR, but we cannot ensure the safety of our staff and the public without the cooperation of the communities we serve."
MCRR’s safety guidelines require that everyone remains 15 feet away from train tracks at all times.
