Metra will conduct Operation Lifesaver "safety blitzes" at 59 of its 242 stations through the end of the year to raise public awareness of safe behavior around trains and tracks.

During a safety blitz, Metra employees will distribute safety educational materials at stations throughout the Chicago area. The materials will address train and grade crossing safety. The employees also will be available to answer commuters' questions and listening to their safety concerns, Metra officials said in a press release.

“Safety is always Metra’s highest priority,” said Metra Chief Executive Officer Jim Derwinski. “These safety blitzes allow us to reach our customers directly to ensure that they understand the need to stay vigilant about safety around the railroad.”

In 2018, Illinois ranked second in the nation in rail fatalities at highway rail crossings and fifth in in trespassing fatalities. Last year, 47 people were killed and 51 more were injured in incidents at grade crossings or along railroad right-of-way in Illinois. Fourteen of these fatalities involved Metra trains. Six of these fatalities occurred at rail crossings, according to Metra officials.

A video about grade crossing safety will also be available for commuters to view while they wait for their train.

The Metra Police Department also will conduct enforcement at locations in the area. Citations and warnings will be issued to pedestrians and drivers who ignore gates and warning devices, Metra officials said.
