Missouri Gov. Mike Parson last week included $35 million for grade crossing safety improvements in his fiscal-year 2024 budget proposal.
The funds will go toward projects that will "update railway crossings all across the state to modern-day safety standards," according to a press release issued by Parson's office.
Twenty-six train-vehicle collisions occurred in Missouri in 2022, which included the deaths of more than 10 people, KQFX-TV reported. The majority of incidents occurred at crossings without automatic warning or safety devices.
The budget now goes to the state Legislature for approval.
