One year after Norfolk Southern Railway and union leaders agreed to work together to improve rail safety, the effort has delivered results, according to NS officials.

On May 23, 2023, NS and rail labor unions issued a joint letter to affirm their commitment to enhancing safety for rail workers and the communities the railroad serves.

"One year later, we’ve delivered significant results — and we’re determined to build on this progress," NS officials said in a website post. The letter was issued in response to the Feb. 3, 2023, NS train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.

Among the safety improvement efforts that have begun since the derailment: NS joined the Federal Railroad Administration’s Confidential Close Call Reporting System, in which rail workers can confidentially report safety concerns they witness on the railroad.

"Norfolk Southern is committed to being the gold standard of safety for the rail industry while improving the quality of life for our craft colleagues," said NS President and CEO Alan Shaw. "Together with our industry unions’ partnership, we’re keeping our promises."
