Later this month, the 2008 Norfolk Southern TRANSCAER Whistle-Stop Tour will roll into Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Virginia. For the ninth time since 1994, Norfolk Southern Corp. is sponsoring a traveling emergency preparedness training program for first responders.

From Sept. 15-19, and starting in Austell, Ga., the Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response (TRANSCAER) train will provide training — via chemical and rail transportation experts — to more than 1,200 first responders in five communities. The train also will educate local residents about rail equipment, chemical transportation and planning for potential hazardous-material transportation emergencies.

At each location, state and local emergency planning committees, emergency responders and government officials will participate in hands-on drills and training sessions. NS also will display training tank cars, specialized emergency response vehicles and over-the-road tank trucks.

TRANSCAER sponsors include the Association of American Railroads, American Chemistry Council, The Chlorine Institute, Chemical Educational Foundation, CHEMTREC®, National Tank Truck Carriers Inc., U.S. Department of Energy's Environmental Management Office and Renewable Fuels Association.
