Rail News: Safety
MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) has implemented a series of interim measures aimed at safeguarding track workers while they perform tasks in the subway. Developed jointly with the Transport Workers Union, the measures address issues associated with communication, adjacent track operation, noise, equipment and procedures.
NYCT will issue radios to crew supervisors performing emergency work in areas without emergency alarm boxes or telephones and place diesel generators at street level when possible. The agency also will require supervisors to inform train operators of general work orders when they report for duty and remind train operators to sound a horn and reduce speed to less than 10 mph when they observe caution lights, flags or workers along the right of way.
In addition, NYCT and the union will conduct safety inspections at work sites prior to all major track construction projects.
