New Orleans Public Railroad (NOPB) officials yesterday announced that the short line has recorded no reportable injuries or human-factor derailments in over a year, marking the first time NOPB has achieved that safety performance level.
To reach that mark, the railroad’s 165 mechanical, transportation and engineering employees provided improvement input from the field, and prioritized repairs and updates to yard tracks and crew facilities based on that input, NOPB officials said in a press release.
Also, the railroad’s safety department implemented a learning management system that allows for training to occur anywhere and on any computer system.
“These measures fostered more collaboration and allowed staff to remain focused on the positive work they were doing in the rail yards,” said Jamie Oldham, NOPB vice president of transportation and mechanical. “We like to stress an environment that is built on teamwork among all our work groups.”
The achievement is based on data from the past 14 years of NOPB records.
