Yesterday, Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) announced that the Memphis Area Transit Authority, Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon, Utah Transit Authority (TRAX) and Valley Metro will receive rail safety education grants as part of OLI’s partnership with the Federal Transit Administration.
“Even as rail transit remains among the safest modes of transportation in the United States, continued growth in ridership heightens the importance of safety education in our communities,” said OLI President Helen Sramek in a prepared statement.
OLI also recognized the following nine transit agencies for incorporating the nonprofit safety education group’s “Bad Move” rail-pedestrian safety poster campaign into their public education efforts: the Central Arkansas Transit Authority; Charlotte Area Transit System; Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority; Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority; Nashville Regional Transportation Authority/Music City Central; Memphis Area Transit Authority; Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority/MetroRail; Hampton Roads Transit; and Sound Transit.
Bad Move campaign public service announcements target people aged 16 to 34 and deliver a message intended to reduce pedestrian-train deaths and injuries, said Sramek. The transit agencies have helped increase awareness about the dangers of walking on or near tracks, she said.
