Orange County Transportation Authority to fund crossing upgrades

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) recently allocated $10 million for a grade crossing safety enhancement program.

The authority plans to upgrade 55 crossings throughout the county by installing medians, four-quadrant gates, additional signage, warning lights, or pedestrian gates and barriers. To begin in spring 2006, work will be done at 52 crossings along OCTA-owned tracks between Fullerton and San Clemente, Calif., and three crossings in BNSF Railway Co.’s San Bernardino Subdivision.

OCTA officials developed the program after evaluating safety features at 64 Metrolink and BNSF crossings. Officials at commuter railroad Metrolink — which is funded and supervised by OCTA — will work with city managers to design the crossing improvements.
