Rail News: Safety

Quiet zone begins along Metrolink line

A second quiet zone went into effect in Riverside, Calif., along Metrolink's 91/Perris Valley Line.

Passenger and freight trains operating through the nearly 2.5-mile section no longer sound their horns at crossings, Metrolink officials said in a press release. Train horns will sound only in emergencies, such as someone walking on the tracks.

The quiet zone designation resulted from a collaboration between Riverside city and county officials and Metrolink, which operates 12 trains through the corridor every each weekday. Union Pacific Railroad, BNSF Railway Co. and Amtrak trains also operate on the track.

Riverside's first quiet zone was launched in November.
