Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) and the rail industry today are marking International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) during an annual conference being held in Denver.

The ILCAD conference, where global rail safety partners gather to discuss safety and awareness, began yesterday.

Officials from the Federal Railroad Administration, International Union of Railways, American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association and other industry organizations are present at the ILCAD conference.

“North American freight railroads understand the need to reduce and ultimately eliminate incidents at grade crossings, particularly because so many of these tragedies are preventable," said Association of American Railroads President and CEO Ian Jefferies. "ILCAD is an important part of increasing awareness around grade crossing safety."

As part of the conference, an Amtrak P-42 diesel locomotive carrying OLI's slogan "See Tracks? Think Train!" is visiting Denver this week in recognition of the safety day as well as to recognize OLI's 50th anniversary. The commemorative locomotive entered service in January.
