The Short Line Safety Institute's (SLSI) training program for short-line hazardous materials professionals has effectively provided crucial safety information that is "highly valued" by participants, according to SLSI analyses.
The analyses of the SLSI's Hazardous Materials Training program indicated it effectively transfers the safety information from instructor to participant, as measured by pre-training and post-training testing. Results also showed the program is meaningful to participants, with 97.4% of feedback survey respondents rating the program positively, SLSI officials said in a press release.
"Since launching the HazMat Training program in 2017, the informal feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. A structured analysis of the feedback surveys has now provided us with encouraging results — participants rate the program positively, confirming that the training program is indeed a valuable resource to short line and regional railroads," said SLSI Executive Director Tom Murta.
The program is intended to supplement training already available on a railroad, and is provided at no cost thanks to a grant from the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, SLSI officials said.
