Smoking ban to take effect outside Metro-North, LIRR stations

On Sunday, the state of New York’s new smoking ban on MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and MTA Metro-North Railroad outdoor platforms, ticketing and boarding areas of terminals will go into effect.
Metro-North stations in Connecticut are not subject to the new law, according to Metro-North officials in a prepared statement.
Metro-North President Howard Permut and LIRR President Helena Williams said the new law will benefit riders by providing a healthier, cleaner and safer environment.
“The new law provides positive impacts for health and safety as well as reducing the potential for track fires,” said Williams. “The majority of our customers and employees are eagerly awaiting a smoke-free environment at our outdoor areas.”
Both railroads are conducting rider education campaigns to raise awareness of the new policy. MTA Police will enforce the law, officials said.
Current rules already prohibit smoking on any train and inside any terminal or station in New York.
