The mobile navigation application Waze yesterday launched a new feature that will provide alerts to users approaching a railroad crossing in order to highlight potential risks and encourage drivers to approach crossings with caution.

The decision to add the feature to Waze follows recommendations from the U.S. lawmakers and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to contribute to efforts to reduce the number of drivers involved in grade crossing fatalities, Waze officials said in a press release.

The Federal Railroad Administration and several North American major rail network operators provided data and  crossing location information to Waze to help develop this feature, Waze officials said.

The feature has been advocated by Amtrak, MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in New York, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, Brightline in Florida, Operation Lifesaver Canada, the Railway Association of Canada, CN, the Regulatory Agency of Rail Transport of Mexico and the Secretary of Communications and Transportation of Mexico.

To learn how LIRR and Norfolk Southern Railway have partnered with Waze to contribute to public safety, read this article from Progressive Railroading.
