The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) earlier this week unveiled a $33 million program aimed at improving safety across its system.

As part of the "Safe and Secure" program, CTA later this year will upgrade more than 3,800 older-model cameras. The agency also will install 1,000 new security cameras "throughout the system," CTA officials said in a press release.

Additionally, the agency will install new lighting, perform repairs and make other improvements to boost safety at its 146 rail stations. Video monitors will be added at all CTA rail stations to improve security monitoring.

The program will be funded through a fee on ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft. Revenue from the fee is dedicated to transit improvements.

The agency also is using funds collected through the fee for a comprehensive track repair and maintenance program. Chicago is the first U.S. city to create a ride-hailing fee dedicated to transit, said Mayor Rahm Emanuel in the release.
