The Societe de transport de Montreal (STM) last week adopted an American Public Transportation Association (APTA)  safety program aimed at encouraging riders to use public transit during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the program, STM committed to:

  • following recommendations and guidelines from public health experts and governing authorities;
  • cleaning and disinfecting stations and rail cars, ensuring proper ventilation of vehicles and facilities and promoting respect for social distancing requirements and wearing of face coverings;
  • keeping passengers informed; and
  • ensuring the health and safety of customers and employees.

About 200 other North American transit agencies have announced their participation in the APTA program, including those in Chicago, New York City and Ottawa, Ontario, STM officials said in a press release.
