A Regional Transportation District of Denver (RTD) contract police officer was shot and killed on Tuesday at the Wynkoop Plaza in the city's lower downtown area.

Scott Von Lanken, who worked for RTD contractor Allied Universal, was killed while on foot patrol duty near Denver Union Station, agency officials said in a statement.

The suspect Joshua Cummings was known to the FBI and previously was involved in an altercation at a Texas mosque, news station Denver 7 reported.

RTD and Allied Universal are working with the Denver Police Department on the investigation, said RTD General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Dave Genova.

"Our entire team is deeply saddened by this loss," said RTD Assistant General Manager of Safety and Security Mike Meader. "RTD and Allied Universal have been in contact with the officer’s family and will continue to offer our support during this sad time."

RTD has established a memorial fund for the slain officer's family. More information can be found on the Rocky Mountain Law Enforcement Federal Credit Union's website.
