FTA seeks to curb violence against transit workers

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has published a proposed general directive on required actions regarding assaults on transit workers.

Published yesterday in the Federal Register, the directive was created to help better assess and address the risks facing front-line transit workers, FTA officials said in a news release.

Public comments on the directive will be accepted until Feb. 20, 2024.

The directive proposes that transit agencies subject to the public transportation agency safety plans regulation be required to conduct a safety risk assessment on transit worker assaults using the safety management system processes outlined in their safety plan.

The proposed directive also requires each transit agency to identify safety-risk mitigations or strategies necessary to improve worker safety based on the risk assessment. Each agency also must provide information to the FTA as to how it is assessing, mitigating and monitoring risks associated with worker assaults within 60 days of the directive's issuance.
